The Farm Life of Iowa
I recently went on my yearly trip to Iowa with my dad. This is a long-standing tradition that we have, and that I always look forward to. We have some family friends who live there that we stay with and it is always refreshing to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy the open country that Iowa has to offer.
The family who we stay with has three boys older than I am, so they are all moved out and doing their own thing, but they all stayed close by, so I still get to see all of them when I go which is really nice. My favorite part about going to visit is the farm life. I love being around the cattle, pigs, chickens and sheep. The Spring is the best time for farm life in my opinion because all of the animals have had their babies, so there is a lot of excitement around and honestly you cannot beat the cuteness of a baby animal.
The family we stay with have cattle for the most part and the calves are always fun to watch as they bounce around and play with each other without a care in the world. Cattle are a lot friendlier than most people would assume and if you give them any semblance of attention they will never leave you alone. The calves act like puppies, they will come up to you, lick you and enjoy being pet. This year has been a little tough on the cattle and farmers since it has been so dry, so farmers have struggled having enough hay to feed all of their cattle. This all goes in phases and no one worries too much about it.
The family I stay with also has three dogs that stay outside and can just roam around freely like wild animals. That being said, they stay pretty close to the house most of the day and always sleep on the porch at night. It is always one of my favorite places to go and when I have to leave I am always a little upset. Everything about farm life is more relaxing and just gives you a sense of ease.
